Historical Background and Description of 30926 Repton

30926 Repton was built at Eastleigh Works and entered service in May 1934 as SR No. 926. It was part of the Southern Railway V Class, better known as the “Schools” Class, designed by Richard Maunsell. These 4-4-0 locomotives were named after English public schools and were the most powerful 4-4-0s ever built in Britain.

The class was designed for intermediate express passenger work on routes with restrictive loading gauges, such as the Tonbridge–Hastings line. Repton was essentially a cut-down version of the Lord Nelson class, using the round-topped firebox from the King Arthur class to reduce overall height.

Heritage and Operational History of 30926 Repton

• Initially allocated to Bournemouth, then moved to Fratton (Portsmouth) until the electrification of the Waterloo–Portsmouth line in 1937.
• Returned to Bournemouth to replace King Arthurs on London expresses, and remained there through WWII.
• Post-war, Repton worked inter-regional services until withdrawn from Basingstoke depot on 30 December 1962, just two years after a major overhaul.

Preservation Journey of 30926 Repton

• Restored at Eastleigh in 1966 and exported to Steamtown USA in Vermont, donated by its purchaser.
• Later loaned to the Cape Breton Steam Railway in Canada, where it received modifications including a high-sided coal tender to meet North American standards.
• Returned to the UK and now operates on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR), where it is a cherished member of the home fleet.

Liveries and Numbers of 30926 Repton

Repton has alternated between its BR identity (30926) and its original Southern Railway number (926) in preservation. It currently runs in Southern Railway Olive Green, reflecting its pre-nationalisation heritage.
