The Stanier 4-6-0 'Black Fives' designed for passenger trains and express freight trains (mixed traffic 5MT rating). My Archive Steam Photos from the 1960s Stanier Black Five 45428 was built as LMS 5428 in 1937 by Sir W. G. Armstrong Whitworth Engineers Ltd (as locomotive works no. 1483) at the Scotswood Works in Newcastle-on-Tyne. The name ERIC TREACY was added in its post British Railways heritage days. Stanier Black Five 45428 ERIC TREACY heading south past Moorgates with a train for Pickering. 45428 is an LMS Black 5 mixed traffic locomotive built by Armstrong Whitworth Newcastle in 1935. This locomotive finished its BR working life at 55A Holbeck shed, the LMS locomotive depot in Leeds. It has worked on the NYMR for many years and has had new driving wheel tyres fitted. 45428 is fitted with the requisite electronic cab warning system (TPWS) to enable it to operate on the national rail network including the Esk Valley Line from Whitby to Battersby.

Service Life under LMS and BR (1937–1967)5428 was allocated to Leeds Holbeck, one of the nearest depots to the North East. Black Fives regularly worked summer trains from the West Riding to Whitby via York, Malton, Pickering, and what is now the NYMR — meaning 5428 likely worked through Newtondale in regular service. Preservation and Naming as Eric Treacy (1967–present)45428 was preserved immediately in 1967 and named “Eric Treacy” after the celebrated railway photographer and Bishop of Wakefield. The nameplate carries a bishop’s mitre in his honour. Move to the NYMR
